Please find the below specification as we have in our environment.

Windows Server 2008 R2
Backup Exec 2012
RDX drive & Cortridges
USB KVM Switch

I have some concern related backup exec & Storage.

Backup is not target to storage untilled we remove the USB KVM switch.
Meanwhile after removing KVM Switch from the server backup is working fine & when we attached KVM switch on server backup is not targets to storage and backup goes as queued.

Please advise

Slow AVVI performance with SAN transport

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Symantec,

Could someone plesae point me in the right direction.  I have the following:

Dell Equallogic arrays in R10 configu with 24x10k spindles each (so they're not slow)

Dell Poweredge R720xd with 24 spindles of 10k drives in R10 (so once again, not slow)

Dell Powerconnect 8132f dedicated 10gb iSCSI SAN network all hosted locally with jumboframes enabled

When I run AVVI backups i only see about around 2000-4000 mb a minute no matter what I seem to do to it. I can confirm from the sgmon logs that the backups are running in SAN transport mode but the throughput is just poorer than I would expect (And have seen in the past)

As I type this I have 2 full backups running with one not moving past 1500mb/min and the other at 920mb/min

when i first got BE2012 installed and working i could consistently backup 10,000-12,000mb a min but as time has gone on (and updates bave been applied) this has stadily reducted.

I can see in SANHQ that IOPS are only around 300-400 (easily under what the array can provide) and the latency is around 10ms

Does anyone have any hints/tips/black magic that may restore backup performance?

Cheers...

BEX 2014 - Catalog tasks fail to complete

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hello,

from a week every catalog tasks I performed on a QNAP NAS fail with this error:

Final error: 0xe000e006 - A backup storage read/write error has occurred.

If the storage is tape based, this is usually caused by dirty read/write heads in the tape drive. Clean the tape drive, and then try the job again. If the problem persists, try a different tape. You may also need to check for problems with cables, termination, or other hardware issues.

If the storage is disk based, check that the storage subsystem is functioning properly. Review any system logs or vendor specific logs associated with the storage to help determine the source of the problem. You may also want to check any vendor specific documentation for troubleshooting recommendations.

Final error category: Backup Device Errors
Completed status: Failed

The NAS disks are ok, already tested many times, sometimes I get also the error "disk offline"... but it's online !

This error happens also with another QNAP NAS using a USB 3.0 disk, no issues using RAID 5 20tb.

Anyway, a catalog task is mandatory or not ?

Backup Exec Enterprise Vault agent not recognizing new EV Directory/Site server after migration

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I followed Symantec's technotes and used the Enterprise Vault Server Migration tool to move our EV server to new hardware. Everything went pretty much perfectly using the migration utility until it came time to backup the vault stores/indexes on the new server. Our Backup Exec CASO server--I think-- is still trying to go to the old EV directory/site server and of course failing out with "browse failure" communication errors ("Enterprise Vault services are not responding to commands sent by Backup Exec; ensure that Enterprise Vault directory service is running").

I've tried restarting the services on the EV SQL server, the EV Directory/Site server and the primary Backup Exec CASO server, but nothing seems to be working.

Does anyone have ideas or thoughts? I can't even really seem to find any event viewer errors on any of the three involved servers.

Thank you very much for any advice or insight.

Best solution to back up Citrix Xen Server

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hello,

I am wondering what the best solution would be for the following:

I have on Citrix Xen Server host that has 7 virtual machines on it.  I am currently using PHD Virtual to back this up to a NAS.  I am looking to move to different software for the backups.  One of the virtual machines is running SQL and one is running AD and DNS.  There is also one physical server that has AD, DNS, and DHCP on it that i would also like to back up in the same solution.  What i was curious about is what is the best way to back all of this up?  Is it Back Up Exec or System Restore?  Or would neither work?  I am looking for something that will back up to the existng NAS and allow for item level restores as well as fast restores of full VM's if ever needed.

Second question is, assuming one of the two products will work is it best practice to install it on its own server or could it be installed on teh physical that is existing with AD, DNS and DHCP?  I am assuming its own server and that is what i would shoot for, but for the sake of saving money i like to know my options.

Thank you for your assistance.

Job Failing, "corrupt data encountered" V-79-57344-65078

Hello all, hopefully this is something you have seen before.

I am backing up a folder which contains Symantec System recovery images. This process has worked forever but since 2 weeks ago I keep getting a job failure notification saying one of the ".V2I" files are corrupt and cannot verify. I tried re-running the system recovery job on that specific server but keep getting the error. I tried tinkering with the Advanced File Open options as well as turning off verification for the job but it still will not complete.

BE 2014 - GRT Recovery - Staging

Hey there

Bit of a strange issue with Restoring/Staging process in BE 2014.

I have done restores from a VM/SAN Transport backup with no issues in the past. However I am doing a restore of a particular server, restoring just a test folder from the C drive (the Backup job ran successfully at the weekend), the restore job kicks in, loads the tape with no issue and then starts the staging process - dont have enough storage locally to do storage based backups. The byte count increases to 50.2GB and then just sits there. I dont see anything in the Job Activity so I dont know what it is (or isnt) doing... Any help/info appreciated.

Managing large backups over a network

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Our current backup scheme is to perform a full backup on weekends and incremental backups during the week. I would like to store these backups off-site but the full backups are several terabytes in size and it would take too long to transfer them over the network every single week. I thought I could perform one initial full backup and then just top it off with small incremental backups thereafter. However, the documentation warned against this because in the event that we had to restore everything we would have to retore the full backup and then every single incremental backup thereafter in order. For a disaster recovery backup that would get unwieldy very quickly.

Is there some sort of backup scheme that's more bandwidth efficient than performing full backups every week?

[Backup Exec 2012] no media/Ready; No idle devices are available/robotic library offline

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hello,

I ran into some sudden issues using Backup Exec 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 in combination with a tape library. The library is a DELL PowerVault (IBM 3573-TL) with an IBM ULT3580-HH5 drive.

Now disk to tape duplication jobs are missing with error E000E020. While BE sets the robotic library offline due to "a general hardware error condition" reported by the library (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...). In reference to the second solution of the troubleshooting article I scanned the Windows System Event Log for the mentioned Event IDs. There were no hits. According to the first solution of the troubleshooting article I'm afraid I'm not aware how I would ideally check if there are bad tapes (so maybe someone could give me a little hint on that).

I tried a complete restart cycle including the BE administration server and the tape library.
Shut down the server > shut down the library > turn on the library waiting until it is on ready-state > turn on the server

The drive is recognized by Windows Device Manager and has a driver.

After that the BE administration displayed the library as online and its drive as ready (the drive name was extended by the term "(no media)"). Rerunning the duplication to tape jobs resulted in jobs not starting but remaining in the state of "Ready; No idle devices are available".

Then I tried to inventory the tape library via BE administration. The job started but didn't finish while after some time BE did set the robotic library offline again.

I feel like running cycles right now. Does anybody have some ideas on this? If you need further information on something I will try to provide it.

Cheers

Upgrading from BE2012

Hi, Upgrading from BE2012 to BE2014 on an SBS 2011 Standrard server. In the Backup Exec Environment Check 2.0 I get a warning about the following:

The Simplified Disaster Recovery feature now requires the Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) version 8.0 to create a Simplified Disaster Recovery disk or an image(.iso). ADK version 8.0 is supported only on Windows 2008 and later. You do not need to install the ADK now. The Create Disaster Recovery Disk Wizard guides you through the download and installation of the ADK.

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the ADK version 8 on a SBS2011 server?

Otherwise I suppose that I cant use the SDR functionality in BE2014 anymore right?

Appriciate if anyone has information regarding my problem.

Synology NAS Incremental backups with BE 2014

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I saw in some old forum posts (re: BE 2010) that someone was unable to do incremental backups on a Synology NAS because incremental backups were not supported unless an agent could be directly installed.  Have there been any changes to this since 2010 that might help me work around this?  This particular NAS does not support iSCSI, so I can't mount it directly...:-(

CATTOOLS output question...

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I recently ran a CATTOOLS to export one of my catalog files to a TXT file.  I had no problem creating this TXT file.  My question  revolves around the content of the TXT file it exported.  I searched for a KEY or cross reference, etc but I can't find anything.  In the exported TXT file, I see these and don't know what they are:

FP= Assuming this is the filepath

SZ= Assuming this is the file size

LB= ???

AT= ??? All values for AT appear to be the same number

CT= ???

MT= ???

ST= ???

AR= ???

XA= ???

IN= ???

OST= ???

IIMG= ???  Appears to a number that increases by 1 in each row.

Any help deciphering this output file would be greatly appreciated!

When installing BE 2014 linux agent, wizard will auto create beoper group and add root as member. In my case, I will create an account BkupAdm on linux agent and use this accout to connect the linux agent from CAS during setup backup job. Do I have to manully add this account into beoper group after installation is completed? Any requirement for the account ? Thanks

Tape Media - Wasted

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

We have the following:

BEXEC 2014
2 Tape Libraries (4 drives in one library and 3 drives in the other)
Several NDMP backups
Mon-Thurs Incrementals
Fri-Sun Fulls

The problem is the space being used on the media and having to reorder more and more LT05s

On the incremental days, there are 10-12 tapes being used. Before pulling these tapes out, we notice that the majority of them have like 90% of the tape unused.

The incrementals go off-site for a period of 4 weeks (OPP) and then come back to us to repeat the cycle.

Is there any way we can use the exact or close to exact number of media without tape space being wasted?

One waywould be to simply place the x number of LT05s into the libraries each night as opposed to loading both libraries with 50 LT05 tapes (normal habit). Is there a way that something can be configured in BEXEC to fill up the tapes in use befor emoving onto a fresh one.

APP periods are set to 24 hours so there is more than enough time for the tapes to be appended to. Typicall all our Mon-Thurs jobs take about 12 hours to complete (all of them).

Thanks
