I am facing same issue. I am taking System State backup of Windows server 2012 R2
Windows server 2012 R2 is installed on different domian & Backup Exec media server is on different domain.
Error i am getting in job :
0xe0008488 - Access is denied.
Access Denied. Cannot backup directory and its subdirectories.
I have diabled GRT option in job selection list & my job has completed successful, but with GRT option enabled it is failing.
Now i have enabled debug & waiting for debug log.
Currently licensed for 6-core with remaining maintenance unitl 2017.
Is there route to trade-up / upgrade to 8-core? and coterminate maintenance.
Or is this question for Symantec reps to address....

I'm having monthly error that is regularly occurring in my backup server where I use Backup Exec 2012 to write some large files into tape with Backup Exec.
The file size is around 300 GB up to 500 GB in one single size and sometimes when the 3rd party backup software got some error in it, it will just delete the file and then replace it with different name. I guess this behaviour causing BE 2012 to stop the Write to tape process and stop the monthly tape backup job with the following error:

How many service pack or patch to be installed after installing Backup_Exec_2014_14.1_SP2_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual ? Only BE1786.1093RSP2_x64bit ? Thanks

For the past week, I've been backup my Exchange. I tried to backup one database in exchange, it's ok noproblem. But the next week, I want backup another database in exchange it's have error:
V-79-57344-34070 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "Microsoft Information Store". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Snapshot technology error (0xE0008516): The database specified for the snapshot was not backed up because the database was not mounted.
I check my exchange all databases are mounted and the VSS list writes are all stable. I try to restart my exchange and start backup again, but get the same errors.
Any suggestion to resolve this problem ?
After upgrading my Backup Exec 2014(14.1.1786.1103) Installation to BE15(14.2.1180.0) i have a issue to update the Agents on all Windows Servers (any Version).
I started to update the server agents on different machines (windows 2008, windows 2003, windows 2012) over the management console(right click, update), but all updates failed wih "0x643 - Fatal error during installation" on windows 2012 servers and "0x80070643 - Fatal error during installation" on windows 2008 R2 servers.
My second way was to try it over the menu installation and licensing > install agents ..., but it fails too (Install failed with error code 1603).
So, i called the Support. To install the BE15 Agent i should try these steps:
After these steps i checked the version in the management console, but the state for the Backup Exec Version did not change from "upgrade available" to "14.2.1180.0".
The support told me to add the the server over "microsoft windows-computer and -server", install the agent again, delete the new server in the console and refresh the old server, the version changed from "upgrade available" to "14.2.1180.0
It work´s but it is not a good solution because when you have fifty of servers, it take hours and hours to update the agents on all servers
I hope symantec delivers a solution soon for this problem.

We are using Backup Exec for a long time, but still backing up to tapes. I like to change it and using disk storage with the deduplication option.We recently upgraded to Backup Exec 2014 and I see that Symantec offers now with Backup Exec 15 Capacity Edition which sounds a good offer with all the agents and options. We are doing full backups each day (3.5TB, about 60% VMware). Our media rotation policy is keep one week (5 Backups) and one Backup for each month ut up to a year (12 Backups).
I was thinking to use Synology NAS as the disk storage. There is a Synology model which I have in mind whih is on the Symantec HCL disk target and fully supports GRT and BEDUP. This Synology models supports iSCSI.
I have in mind to set up a iSCSI network with the BE media server and create a LUN on the Synology.
I have a few questions to be sure that I have understood everything correctly.
1) In the BE admin guide there are two type of devices mentioned. OpenStorage device and Deduplication disk storage.
Would a Synology NAS be Deduplication disk storage?
2) Will this setup also support client side deduplication or on deduplication on the backup server? If it supports both, what do you suggest to use?
3) Will this set up support all kind of restore? Important for us is GRT without staging of VM disks
4) Will we be able to keep our "media rotation" policy to keep monthly backups with Deduplication?
5) I plan to use RAID 1 on the Synology NAS. I know it is software RAID only.
We intend to buy two Synology NAS and use one device for off-site replication over the internet. Synology supports Netbackup. In this case Backup Exec will not be used for a copy backup job.to another device.
Beside all my questions, does this plan sound okay? A typical OST devcie seems to be too costly and I think Synology products have a good reputation.

What's the difference with the restore option? The first option can combine the full and differential backup, then we don't have to restore twice and merge the folder restored from full and diff like BE2010 do? Thanks

Hi Community,
Just looking to get some help with a server I am currently installing Backup Exec 2014 on. It is a Windows '03 server that we recently upgraded to BE14 and initially we were on the trial version and now that it has run out we have purchased the full licences. Unfortunately we haven't been able to upgrade the licences like you normally would through the Installation and Licensing section when you open up BE. When you click on "Import Symantec Licence File" I get the below error message.
"The install failed with an unexpected error: Method not found: 'System.Strin System.Windows.Forms.OpenFileDialog.get_SafeFileName()"
. 
So far I have tried running a repair of the software from control panel and manually uninstalling BE completely and attempting to reinstall from scratch again. However every time I get up to the "Add Licences" section during installation I run into the same error again. Have previously installed BE14 on a number of servers, sometimes upgrading from trial version and have never come across this issue.

I have virtualized a mission critical Windows NT Server 4.0 member server (SP6a) system.
But my BEX 2014 SP2 will NOT back it up within vCenter (ESXi 5.0)
It hangs and locks and forces a hard takedown.
BUT the system runs fine in vCenter and on the network.
I was wondering if anyone would know if it is because BEX 2014 simply does not work on NT systems.
Any info you could offer would be appreciated.

I am trying to recover a contact for a user and i am getting this error about the path for staging the temporary restore data running out of disk space. Our exchange database is not very big, only about 40GB, the temp area i set up for GRT has almost 100GB free, so why would i get this error? I am using a spare partition, separate from where BUE actually is installed, but on the same server. The Backup and Recovery GRT temp areas are set to E:\BUE-Recovery. I use tape for my backups. This is actually the first time i've tried restoring an individual mailbox item, and the first time i've tried restoring anything for Exchange 2010.
I am using Backup Exec 2012, my Backup Exec server setup is on a Windows 2008 R2 server, using LTO3 tapes in a Dell tape library. Exchange is 2010 sp3 on Windows server 2008 R2. I recently migrated from Exchange 2003 server a couple of months ago. Under my old Exchange 2003 server I've restored the mailbox store several times, and used exmerge to recover mailboxes, this is my first attempt to use GRT.
I am I miss reading the error message? Here is the exact error message from the log:
The path on the Backup Exec server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items from tape ran out of disk space. Either clear some disk space, or click Application Menu > Configuration and Settings > Global Job Defaults > Granular Recovery Technology, and enter a restore path that has more disk space.

I have a old windows server 2003 with Symantec Backup Exec 8. They are installed by supplier in 2009. Today we want to migrate the Symantec Backup Exec 8 License to a new server. but when I use the License key that provided by the supplier to install the software, it warning me the license key is wrong. The Supplier has lost contact and they have not get us the whole license agreement, How can i get back my true license key from my old server?
Tried to install backup exec 15 - it would not let me install the server version on my computer, only the remote option.

Hi we have off site backups saving onto a deduplication disk, this has now started to error. We have 500GB free space which equates to 18% on disk management but backup exec has the below error. I have checked the system event logs and no mention of disk issues.
Also, when originally setting up backup exec, we took several snap shots of the data and kept them on the disk. If we were to remove those to free up the space, would the restores still be available on up to date backups?

This patch solves security problems and disable ssl3, tls v1.0 and enable tls 1.2,etc. You can see it in

Now I can not backup Server. I run a job and it reamins in state "queue and running" but it does not copy anything and does not end never. If I cancel the job it does not ends and I have to stop Backup Exec services.
I think the problem is associated to communication protocol. I think IBM has changed some and Symantec can not establish a communication to backup.
How could I fix it or debug the problem?
What protocol does Symantec use to communicate with Lotus Domino?

So I'm wondering, when I create a backup and I say keep for 2 weeks for example, when are the data deleted exactly.
I'm especially wondering, if the data will be deleted if the job fails. Let's say I have a 3 weeks holiday and the backup keeps data for 2 weeks. Say all the jobs fail when I'm on holiday. When I come back will all the backup be deleted?
