Advice on job/mediaSet setup

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hi Everybody

I have recently been handed over the management of a Backup Exec 2012 instance, for which I have only little knowledge.

I am struggling a little bit on the current configuration and I’d like to get my head around it, and possibly make it easier and more effective.

Right now, I have a Robotic library with 8 tapes capacity and 16 tapes in total (so 8 in, 8 out).

I have 2 “media sets” (Set1 and Set2), containing 8 tapes each.

Both media sets are configured to overwrite protection: Infinite, Append period: Infinite.

The idea being:

  • Backup files on Set1, until Set1 is full.
  • Manually change Set1 for Set2 in Robotic Library, and change backup jobs to use Set2
  • Backup files on Set2, until Set2 is full.
  • Manually change Set2 for Set1 in Robotic Library, and change backup jobs to use Set1.

(At that stage, we need to allow somehow Backup Exec to overwrite Set1, which was done by my ex colleague by setting the overwrite period to none… Not the best practice I guessJ)

Now I am entirely open to suggestions you may have to help, or even small hint about how I should really use media set etc.

Information that might help, we don’t need to keep the data for ages, the rotation system fits us wellm wghat is the most important for us is the last backup set, we can’t really allow a rollback with old data.

Thanks for your help!

Setting up a test system

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I am setting up a test network using Hyper-V vms that replicates my neywork. I am running BackupExec 12.5. I am going to run a test restore to an Windows Exchange vm, and I have a few questions:

Does the target Exchange vm have to have the same machine name as the real one in order to do a full restore?

Is it possible to do a resore of a backup done on a Windows Exchange 2003 to a Windows Exchange 2007 or 2012? I am looking at this a a possible strategy to do a migration from a Exchange 2003 to a Exchange 2012.

Any help will be appreciated

Backup exec 2012 and Russian chars in backup

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hi,

I have quite a few tapes in russian, the filenames show up as [08 12] [09 13].xls format.  When I try to catalog a tape it hangs on a specific filename

that is very very very long.  How can I russian backup support codepages so that reading this data from tape is not a problem?? Unfortunately the backup starts with the file server, and the data I need is on a mail server backed up after the file server.  But it never gets there because it hangs on the file server backup contents.

Any ideas on this?

thanks in advance,

OST vs CIFS for BackupExec 2012

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hello,

I am running BackupExec 2012 and recently bought 2 x Dell DR4000 as my backup media appliance.  I am planning on having one DR4000 locally and one at a remote location for replication.  While setting up the DR4000, I've learned that the DR4000 can not replicate to each other if OST containers are used.  However, it will replicate to each other if I use CIFS containers.

The delima comes in when setting up the jobs for backup.

1.  Using OST, I can setup the backups to target the local DR4000#1 then "Duplicate" to the remote DR4000#2 and Tapes Library at the same times.  The Duplicaiton is being controlled by the Symantec BackupExect server.

2.  Using CIFS, I can usetup the backups to target the local DR4000#1 then "Replicate" the conntainer to the remote DR4000#2 and to Tapes Library.  The Replicaiton is being done by the DR4000's and run indedpendently from the Symantec BackupExect server.

*** Sorry, no picture for this one but it's a just a straight backup job to the DR4000#1 then Duplication to Tapes Library.

Which one would be the prefer method?  Let the BackupExec server do the Duplication? Or let the DR4000's do the Replication?  Is there Pro's and Con's to teach methods?

Thanks,

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I am currently backing up to a 1 tyrabyte drive and everything works fine. I configured a Seagate external drive to use and once I created the drive, it states history of disk space is being gathered and never states that current space is sufficient?  When I try to backup to the drive it fails. Error code 8004230F.  Below is the log of failed job. I need to get this resolved.

About reset Change Block Tracking (CBT) for VMware Backups

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I found one Symantec KB about reset Change Block Tracking (CBT) for VMware Backups.

One setting is need to edit setting of VM

  • Locate "ctkEnabled" and change the value to "false"
  • Locate "scsi0:x.ctkEnabled" and change the value to false.  (where "x" is the number for the vmdk file, example scsi0:0.ctkEnabled would be the first VMDK for the virtual machine)
  • Open the folder the virtual machine is stored in on the datastore and remove any -CTK.VMDK files
  • Power on the virtual machine
  • After the virtual machine has completed it's boot sequence, power the virtual machine off. Note: This step is required to update the CTK tables for the virtual machine.
  • Power on the virtual machine.
  • Run the backup of the virtual machine.  When this backup runs CBT will get enabled. (If the backup is scheduled to run at a later time CBT will get enabled at that time)

Do I need to change ctkEnabled" and change back the value to "true" after power on VM? When change the value of "ctkEnabled" to "false", do it mean that disable Change Block Tracking (CBT) for VMware Backups? Backup size of each VM is equal to the maximum size of VMDK when each backup performs?

Queued jobs in Backup Exec 12.5

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I had to reinstall BE on a different server due to low disk space.

When I start a bkup job, it starts, inits, goes to que where it hangs.  It usually take ~5-10seconds in the que.  Now it stays there.  I have waited an hour on one occasion.  I've tried cancelling the job and restarting several times.  Doesn't work.

The job is going to a Backup-to-Disk folder.  It's online and everything there appears ok.

Any ideas?

Files not overwriting

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Once again, let me say that I am new to Backup Exec. I have all of our servers backing up to 2 different storage devices.  I believe I have the backup jobs set up identical to each device, however I am seeing one main difference between the files on the devices. The one device never gets full, it always maintains about the same amount of free space.  The second device always gets full, I have to go in and manually delete the files so I do not receive failed jobs.  My first thought is that I did not have the media sets set up correctly, so I created a new media set.  I specified that I wanted the data to append and overwrite in 45 days.  However with that said and done I still have files from more than 45 days ago.  I want this device to be self sustaining like the other device.

The second thing that I need is some advice...  What is the ideal size for back up files?  I have just taken over the back up's for the company I work for and they had the file size limit set from any from 1 GB to 999GB.  I always thought 4 GB was a good limit, although I am guessing that it should also be dependent on the amount of data in which you are backing up.

I would appreciate some input on these 2 questions.  Thanks for your time.

BE 2010 B2D : don't have access to more than 1 day recovery history

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hello everyone,

I have a problem I can't seem to be able to solve on my own.
A little background : using backup exec 2010, we used to backup around 850 GB of data every night on LTO4 tapes. The tape drive failed, so I tryed to switch to an iSCSI attached drive to do backup to disk. I created a backup folder on said disk leaving every thing on default ( 4GB file size, 100 saves / files ). On the job, I set up a 5 days data protection.

The job is running well, but when I check the restoration menu, I only see the last backup available for recovery. None of the 4 others I would like to get.

So, there is enough room on the attached disk for the 5 days of backup history ( 7 TB left atm) and I noticed that whatever I do, there are 150 backup files in the folder I set up for backup. Like there is some limit set up somewhere and there is a set (150x4) 600GB of disk space set for this backup job ( wich obviously should not be enough for our 850+ GB of data, maybe compression is very good )

I guess I am missing something easy, but I can't find the option and can't formulate a good question on google to get any info.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers !

Backup Exec looking at Incorrect Location for Exchange Store

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I inherited a network that has an Exchange server running with the information store located on an external hard drive.

When I try to run a backup of Exchange through BackupExec, the backup fails because it says it cannot find the information store.

So looking up information about where BackupExec is looking for the Information Store, it is looking in:

\\servername\Microsoft Information Store\Public Folder Database 1234567890\

Where hte actual location is:

e:\Microsoft\Exchange\mailbox\first storage group\ etc.....

So I am haivng difficulty in finding where I can actually point BackupExec to look in the right location so the backup process can complete as it should.

Any suggestions?

Converted Physical to Virtual, Server 2003 Prompts for Activation

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I just stood up ESXI and converted a physical full back up with RAWS agent installed  to a virtual for the fist time. This is in review of possibly limiting downtime for servers with a disaster.

After the conversion (surpsisingly very fast) I turned on the Server 2003 Database within its seperate environment outside of production to prevent deduplicated IPs on the network.  It prompted for a Windows Server activation. Either had the option to do it over the internet or phone.  How do you handle these types of problems when converting physical to virtual for only backup purposes if a server were to fail?  I believe all the servers I manage (20 or so) have OEM keys.

Thanks

Understanding VM with GRT Backups in a DMZ

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hey All,

Hoping someone can help me get my head around how this would work as we are seeing large amounts of traffic on our firewall.

We have a number virtual machines that sit in a DMZ (which are hosted on a host inside our permiter). We backup these servers to disk using VM backup with GRT. When these backups run, we see a signficant amount of activity on our firewall, as if the entire backup is running from the DMZ, through the firewall to the NAS (where our B2D backups are kept).

Is this correct behaviour? My understanding would be that the VM would be backed up from the host (on the SAN), to the NAS, and then the backup job catalogs or indexes the files using the Remote Agent on the VM. If that is true, then surely only the indexing would be going through the firewall and the bulk of the job would be all local?

Hopefully that makes sense

We are using Backup Exec 2010 R3

Cheers

Tape Labelling needs multiple tries

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

We have our LTO4 Tape library partitioned into 4 drives to match the 4 cartridges. The system has worked perfectly for about 1 1/2 years.

We started to notice (after upgrading to BE 2010r3 from r2 - and there might be no connection, don't know) that when we label a tape, go to properties, the old data is not "deleted" - or whatever a label really does. The pie chart still shows existing data. We have to label 3, 4, 5 times until it "takes." Dell has done tests and finds no hardware problem and Symantec support does not know about this either. Does anyone know about this problem/solution?

How to Restore 2010 R3 Media Server?

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

I'm going to be refreshing the server that is currently running our Backup Exec 2010 R3 media server.  So basically, re-installing the O.S. on current media server and then re-installing R3.  I've seen comments on this forum that mention copying DATA and CATALOG folders to be able to recover jobs, policies, etc. but is this all I need to backup?  Is there a Symantec procedure for this somewhere...I haven't been able to find it.

Can I use the existing tape drive to backup the required files and then restore back to itself?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Daily Incremental Log backup failed

Ja, ich suche eine Lösung

Hello everyone.

I have problems when I try to backup SQL servers.

Following the http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag..., I have created backup jobs for each one of these servers. The first one is running weekly and perform a full backup of system and non-system SQL databases and the second runs daily and performs transaction logs backup.

Full backups are completed successfully but incremental logs are succesfull too but only for 3 or 4 or 5 days and then failed with the following message:

Final error: 0xe0000363 - The Backup Exec SQL Agent was not used to create the last full, differential, or log backup of this database. You must use the SQL Agent to run a full backup before you can run a differential backup or transaction log backup. Final error category: Resource Errors

followed by the following errors

Backup- SERVER\MSSQLSERVER
V-79-57344-867 - The last Full backup of database CMS was not made by this application. Run a new Full backup, then run this job again.

V-79-57344-867 - The last Full backup of database CMSAUDIT was not made by this application. Run a new Full backup, then run this job again.

V-79-57344-867 - The last Full backup of database EPABO was not made by this application. Run a new Full backup, then run this job again.

V-79-57344-867 - The last Full backup of database ReportServer was not made by this application. Run a new Full backup, then run this job again.

V-79-57344-867 - The last Full backup of database ReportServerTempDB was not made by this application. Run a new Full backup, then run this job again.

If I run manually a full backup everything returns to normal until the next error occurence

I know very well (double checked) that no other backup jobs are running on these servers (no native or third party SQL backup) and further more I even had to disable the sql agent service just to make sure it will not be triggered by something hidden but the problem is still there. I don't know what else to try so any help is much appreciated.
